OK here goes:
Arensburg, Schepartz, Tillier, Vandermeersch, Duday and Rak, 1990: A
reappraisal of the anatomical basis for speech in Middle Palaeolithic
hominids: American Journal of Physical Anthropology 83, pp 137-146.
(Sorry, I was quoting this off the top of my head before and I got the
year wrong).
E. Culotta, 1993: At each others' throats, Science 260 p 893;
Lieberman, Laitman, Reidenberg and Gannon 1992: The anatomy, physiology,
acoustics and perception of speech, Jnl Human Evolution 23, pp 447-467.
(Also loads of other stuff by Lieberman, best place to start is his 1992
book "Uniquely Human - the evolution of speech, thought and selfless
behaviour", Harvard UP).
Hayden, B - erm, haven't got a copy of this but am sure it was in
American Jnl Phys Anth in January or February of 1993 or 1994. Sorry
about that.
I did my undergrad dissertation (at Durham as it happens) on neanderthal
speech. The references I used most were Lieberman, Davidson and Noble,
Gibson and Ingold, Stringer and Gamble and so on. I'm always keen to
discuss the subject of you're interested.
Cheers,
Jennie
