Course Announcement

This course was delivered in Ottawa in 1993 and in Rome and Ottawa
again in 1994. In all courses, the training was well received and many
of the 80 participants expressed an interest in developing their skills
further through additional modules to this introductory course.

As a result of the numerous requests received during the past year,
the course is being repeated in Ottawa during the weeks of March 6,
June 5 and November 6, 1995. If you are interested in participating,
please complete the attached application form.

Purpose of Course

To increase effectiveness in project management practices by
introducing new Low-cost Digital Heritage Recording Computer Tools
and Technologies to practitioners and project managers involved in:

- cultural resource conservation practices
- building rehabilitation
- architectural and engineering retrofit programs
- asset/facility management
- FHBRO projects management

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Course Objectives

To provide managers, architects, engineers, archaeologists,
conservationists and technologists with an understanding of:

- "user friendly" computer technologies that are being made
available to those using personal computers; and,

- how to progressively make use of these new digital recording
technologies within current practices.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Course Description

Day 1

Participants will be introduced to:

- the principles and practices in heritage recording (see
attached definitions);
- the role of heritage recording within the conservation
process;
- the traditional and new recording techniques currently
in use by Parks Canada;
- the Recording, Documentation and Information
Management Guidelines for World Cultural Heritage Sites
which provide a framework for the development and
integration of new digital recording technologies within
conservation practices

It should be noted that Day 1 is designed to provide an overview of the
principles and practices of recording, documentation and information
management for program and project managers who cannot attend the
full course.

Days 2 to 5

Participants will be introduced to new ways of working with "desktop
heritage recording" technologies through hands-on experience with digital
recording tools. This will consist of a field exercise followed by computer
hands-on practices with imaging & rectification software, scanners, video
cameras using CAD workstations and Internet.

The exercises will also consist of compiling the digital data collected into
a low cost electronic technical report containing text, images and CAD
overlay types of drawings. These reports will be formatted to be transferred
by Internet to remote locations.

Visits to three state-of-the-art digital data processing laboratories that
specialize in heritage recording, raster GIS and 3D visualization will take
place during the week.

Expected Results

At the end of this course, participants will have been exposed to a
variety of low-cost digital recording tools and will have compiled a
sample electronic heritage recording report.
