A chimp's weight is not over its hips and hence cannot hold an
erect posture without getting sore muscles or cramps or both.

Try carrying some weight around by walking around bent over at about
30% at the hips or waist and see how you feel.

It's like asking why humans can't be good quadrupeds. One big reason
is that the knees would be hitting the stomach and chest. Wouldn't
this be difficult to achieve i.e. humans become quadrupeds?
