I love the way Leakey says Turkana boy was "tall by anyone's standards"
in Origins Reconsidered. No, actually, tall by any white Western
anthropolgoists' standards, not by those of the Maasai and other tall
African groups who live in that area. Amongst these groups it's
commonplace for males to be seven foot tall.
But in answer to the original point, it is likely that early hominids
went hrough childhood more quickly than we do, for several reasons. Work
in that area is currently concentrating on neadnerthals really, but see
Holly Smith's work on the Turkana teeth for childhood speeds.
