I once heard a theory for the development of human bipedalism
that was a little different-- apparently big cats are less
likely to attack an individual standing upright. Their usual
mode of attack is to jump on the backs of quadrupeds. Thus
a fully bipedal individual would have had a better chance
against these predators.
