The hominids in Shanidar are Neandertals, who currently are classified as
_Homo sapiens neanderthalensis_, or a subspecies of _H. sapiens_.
You might want to go to the library and do WILS search on keywords like
human and evolution and neandert(h)al and symbolism. There's an
interesting debate over whether archaic sapiens had modern-human style
culture complete with symbolism and such.
The stuff the Bible reports on, even if true (I don't want to get into
/that/ debate) is too recent to have any bearing on this type of
discussion. Biblical people were modern _H. sapiens_, so there isn't any
reason to think that they may have had different biologically-based behavior.
