neanderthals and climate

I was hoping someone out there could give some information on
the climate in which the neanderthals lived (especially references).
I was under the impression that they lived in valley areas near
glacial flows. One source (signon San Deigo) stated that part of the
time the climate was semitropical. Does anyone have any references
for this? Thanks in advance for your time.
