Forgive my naivete, but I thought there were very good reasons to
believe that Plato's story of Atlantis was based on the volcanic
eruption of the Mediterranean island of Thera, which quite possibly
caused the decline of the entire Minoan civilization.

Is this hogwash? There is no question that the eruption was truly
gigantic, and that excavations on Thera have revealed a quite advanced
civilization.
