The best paper on the paleogeography of Afar is by Paul Mohr.
The title is Afar, the reference is Ann.Rev. Earth Planet
Sci. 6, pp145-172.

You don't even need paleogeography to settle this point. The
landscape in the centre of Danakil consists of a vast salt
plain extending to the horizon in all directions. Or ask the
botanists. The Danakil Alps were Danakil Island long enough
for some of the flora to start speciating.
