So you would be quite happy to say " . look at that striding
duck . . " or " . . emperor penguins stride across the
ice . . "?

If the technical literature choses to abuse the meanings of
ordinary words, then it should do so with explicit apologies
to all of us. It invariably happens because some careless
or ignorant scientist has blundered or not bothered to
consult a dictionary.
