I believe you are slightly in error here. It is my understanding
(correct *me* if I am wrong) that the New Mexico government wants to
allow schools the option of using creationist doctrine as a curricula.
It did not ban, as I understand this news story, the teaching of
evolution in public schools, as this would be censorship by
the State, which even the *conservative* members of the U.S. Supreme
Court agree, is blatantly unconstitutional.
However, any legislation that gives schools the option of teaching
creationist dogma rather than teaching evolution science is a major
set-back in our teaching our young citizens how to think
scientifically, how to think skeptically, and how to think critically.
