giant vegetables and the men who grow them

Hi - Does anyone out there know anything about growing giant vegetables
and/or the people who do so? Apparently, there are people who live in my
area (Northeast England) who grow giant leeks, and I want to find out more
about this/them. I've been told that this is a very working class thing,
and that it is a male activity. If anyone has any ideas on the topic
(literature that may be related, research questions that might need
asking) I'd love to hear from you....
