Oh no! I have committed an appalling faux pas. Nowhere did I mention
that _The Romans_ was about *classical* Rome, from the early Republic
to the late Empire. My classical education has given me a distorted
view of the world -- I entirely forgot that the city of Rome didn't
disappear completely when Alaric sacked it. My apologies to everyone,
and particularly to any Romans on the list!

Danny.
