A nice, short, annotated translation (still in print, in paperback, and only
costs $9.95) is ADVENTURES IN THE UNKNOWN INTERIOR OF AMERICA by Alvar Nunez
Cabeza de Vaca, translated by Cyclone Covey (University of New Mexico Press,
1983). ISBN 0-8263-0656-x.

Jerald Milanich's new book, FLORIDA INDIANS AND THE INVASION FROM EUROPE
(University Press of Florida, 1995, ISBN 0-8130-1360-7), delineates the
massive cultural change that took place in Florida. I have not yet read the
book (I am waiting for my copy), but will send along more information when I
get it. Another good source, especially for the Southwestern U.S. is Edward
Spicer's CYCLES OF CONQUEST (I believe it has just been republished in a new
edition).
