Yes, there is a tradition of placenta eating among certain Westerners
(although I have yet to follow the genealogy of this tradition).
Stories abounded, which I was doing fieldwork in Vanuatu in the late
1970s, of the South African anthropologist who gave birth on Espiritu
Santo and consumed the placenta, ground, in orange juice, much to the
