AP, summarizing an article published today in _Science_, reports new support
for the theory that smelting operations in Greece and Rome polluted not
just their own areas, but the entire Northern Hemisphere, in the greatest
pre-industrial pollution. French scholar Claude Boutron "found that lead
suddenly increased hundreds of times above normal levels 2500 years ago,
and stayed that high for the next 800 years." The levels were recorded
in the Greenland ice cap.

This shows in yet another way how they were the leaders of Western civilization
