White Tiger

I was reading a book on different forms of the Japanese tea ceremony, and
the author referred to "the blue dragon and the white tiger". I am
familiar with references to yin and yang in animal terminology (dragon
and phoenix, etc.), and I know that the color white is often associated
with yin. However, I've never heard of the tiger used as a symbol for
yin.

Was this a yin/yang reference or was it something different? Is blue
usually associated with yang? Any help would be appreciated, especially
book references.

Thank you!

Janet
