Kathleen,

I can't write a lot now, but I do want to thank you for ringing in. For the
last couple of days I've been reading a little of Goody's Domestication of the
Savage Mind. I'm real glad to learn that others have found his hypotheses
troubling, and I'm even more glad to hear they have been empirically tested and
found to be unsupported by the evidence. I see now where some of the notions
about language, writing, and consciousness have been coming from.
