If we persue the subject of memes any farther, perhaps the following analogs
in terminology might be appropriate:
BIOLOGY CULTURE
gene meme
genome memome
genotype genomeme
phenotype phenomeme
The question of isolating "An American Culture" then becomes one of
identifying the relationship between the terms in the "American" context.
POPULATIONAL CONSIDERATIONS:
What is the human memome comprised of?
What portion of the memome is represented by "Americans?"
INDIVIDUAL CONSIDERATIONS:
What are typical "American" memes?
How do they combine and interact in individual genomemes?
How do individual genomemes produce identifiable individual phenomemes?
FOUNDATIONAL CONSIDERATIONS:
What is a meme made of and how is it encoded?
Do memes reside in other than organic media?
I can see there is no end to this, so I will arbitrarily stop.
"Be meming you..."
