I read John Stevens's post with interest because the positivist position
did, in fact, take over American Antiquity in the early 1970's. There is
an article by Richard Watson in a recent Current Anthropology about it, and
I (among others) wrote a reply titled Scientific Archaeology and the
Radial Critique in which I pointed out that in archaeology there had to be
diversity of apporaches or the field would be stifled. I believe that to
be true for any journal and for the field in general. I would strongly
push this for the AA. Gee- Have I slandered anyone?
Take care
