A paper by Moss in American Anthropologist vol 95 (1993) no. 3, seems
relevant here. She suggests that, for the Tlingit, salmon had vast
importance particularly for 'aristocrats' (her term) but shellfish
were more basic for large parts of the population.

Characterizing Northwest Coast subsistence as 'salmon' is a vast
oversimplification.
