Another great source in English is the Roland Hamilton translation of Cobo now
in paperback (2 vols.) from the Univ. of Texas Press as "History of the Inca
Empire" and "Inca Religion and Customs". Cobo, writing in the early 17th
century, in Peru, had first hand knowledge and access to a number of other
early sources now lost to us. He was also a first rate observer and
reporter; a mine of detail and good thinking. The fuller version "Historia
del Nuevo Mundo" by Fr. Bernabe Cobo in Biblioteca de Autores Espanoles
should be available in any good library although as Hamilton tells us,
"all published versions of the Historia are based on imperfect copies..."

good reading.
