I think you mean Chad Oliver, who until his recent death was with the
anthropology department at the University of Texas. He also wrote
Westerns. Chad Everett is an actor (remember Medical Center?) with
no anthropological training, as far as I know.

My understanding is that Vonnegut was eventually awarded his Master's
by the University of Chicago in anthropology after they decided they
could accept his novel _Cat's Cradle_ as a thesis. But don't quote me
on that - I might have the details wrong.
