One alternative that I used in writing a procedure manual for the library
I work for is to alternate the pronouns for different examples. For one
explanation/example in the manual, I use "he" or "him" to designate a
patron or student. In the next example, I use "she" or "her". This
keeps the text inclusive and also easy to read.
