The Department of Anthropology at Brandeis University (Waltham, MA) is
sponsoring a conference, "Problems of Comparison: Anthropological
Perspectives," on Wed., Dec. 1, 1993 and Thur., Dec. 2, 1993. On Dec. 1,
Robert Hunt, of Brandeis University, is speaking at 4:30 PM and his topic
is "Apples, Oranges, and Irrigation Systems: Achieving Commensurability in
Observation Languages." On Dec. 2, there are several talks: Carol Ember,
of Hunter College, is speaking at 9:00 AM and her topic is "Achieving
Comparability in Worldwide Cross-Cultural Research: An Example from Peace
Studies." F.K. Lehman, University of Illinois, is speaking at 10:45 AM on the
topic of "Cognitive Categories and Galton's Problem: South East Asian
Regional Comparison." At 2 PM, Benson Saler, of Brandeis, is speaking on
"On Resemblance and Cross-Cultural Comparisons."
