Ok, fellow anthropoids, here's a new threadoid:
Participant observation: good or bad? What's the current consensus of
the profession? Should we stay out of the "emic" stuff and just report on
what we see, etically? Or is it our goal to understand certain rituals and
practices by doing them ourselves?
Does the participant observation technique invalidate objectivity? Is it
unscientific? Does it make anthropology more humanistic and empathetic?
Can participant observation be of any use to applied anthropologists?
Hmmm... there's an interesting one.
Is it proper to include participant-observation data in a study? I.e. "I
allowed myself to be possessed and this is what I felt..."
What's the current feeling on these matters...?
