There are a variety of transliterations of this pioneer ethnographer's
name. The one 'established' as standard for US library practice=
by the
Library of Congress is:
Miklukho-Maklai, Nikolai Nikolaevich, 1846-1888
There are a number of works about him, mostly, but not entirely,=
in
Russian. A brief entry with citations to his major works and works=
about
him may be found, under Miklukho-Maklai, N.N. (Nikolai Nikolaevich)=
(where
the terminal 'i' in each case has a diacritic) on pp. 476-7 of the
Library-Anthropology Resource Group's INTERNATIONAL DICTIONARY OF
ANTHROPOLOGISTS, Christopher Winters, General Editor (Garland, 1991.)=
=20
There was a collected works in Russian published in 1950-54, in 5=
vols. in
6 parts. Progress Publishers in Moscow put out, in 1982, a translation=
of
his most specifically 'pre-Malinowski' work: TRAVELS TO NEW GUINEA:=
=20
DIARIES, LETTERS, DOCUMENTS, by (their transliteration) N. Miklouho-Maclay.
It's 518pp. On the basis of that, the fact that a major Soviet
anthropological research institute was named for him, and the following
citations, it would seem that while he may not occupy a position=
comparable
to Boas or Malinowski in the history of the field, and of fieldwork=
as a
method, he's not without recogniton and study either.
A few of the works about him, in English and French:
