Fonts and such

My question is, for once, not polemical ! I presently use Word 6.0 for
Windows but am unable to create characters in phonetic script or even in
some multinational script. Is there anyone out there that knows of a
font package that I can get to allow me to create these aforementioned
characters ? I have asked the Microsoft Canada Help personnel but I get
the impression that they do not exactly what I am talking about and
referred me to their Web Page.
Incidentally, is there a word processor for PCs that is better
suited to write anthropological monographs ? (This is probably polemical !).
