Dr Bob Bartholomew (James Cook University of North Queensland) and I have
prepared a paper on collective religious expressions (group behaviours) and
the tendency to "medicalise" and "pathologise" them.
The paper looks at the tendency of psychiatrists and social scientists to
view the more unusual expressions of religious devoutness as evidence of
mental illness (touching on revivalism, the "Toronto Blessing", cargo
cults, possession states, magical and fringe science "cults",
self-flagellation etc).
We are trying to find suitable journals to submit the paper to. We were
thinking of the Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion. Does anybody
know of any other possibilities?
