Intro texts for interdisciplinary course?

Pardon a non-anthropologist's simple question: I
have to teach an interdisciplinary course in the fall
called "Ancient Civilizations" and I'm wondering
whether anyone could suggest some available and
accessible (to freshmen/women) texts. I am
trained in philosophy and for my upcoming course
have an interest in talking about the formation
of cities and the division of labor. Any ideas
about books dealing with these themes? I'm just
getting started, so I'd be happy to hear about
books from all perspectives (materialist,
"idealist," whatever).

Thanks in advance for any and all help.
