laptops in the tropics (re: transformers)

While doing fieldwork in the northeast of Brasil some years ago I had quite
some problems with my laptop. It turned out that the source of these
malfunctionings was not the voltage (which is quite unreliable in the
brazilian backlands - however most laptops adjust between 100 and 240 as someone else
already reported) but heat in general. So if you encounter problems look for
an airconditioned environment to work in; working at night can be solution
too.
