There is a wondeful new book out, a reader of current theory, comnentary
and research on fashion. It is called "Chic Thrills", Edited by Juliet
Ash and Elizabeth Wilson (the latter had a nice book called "Adorned in
Dreams" on the history of fashion). 1992, California, in paperback. I
will use it in my spring seminar on consumer culture. A general source
on the history of the manipulation and use of feminine beauty in US
consumer culture is Lois Banner's very thorough "American Beauty"
(Chicago, 1984). Ou own anthropological colleague Robin Lakoff had a
book on beauty about 1983 or 4 too, but for the life of me I can't
remember the title at this moment.
