How should a practicing anthropologist then interpret groups of African
women who are lobbying here and in their home countries to outlaw the practice
of infibulation; women who have no difficulty using the word 'mutilation';
women who are more concerned about the health hazzards than the sexual
gratification won or lost? The conversation that has been going on here with
men and women alike has really begun to annoy me, since you speak as if the
'natives' were still happy in their cultural otherness. It would be different
if there was, as yet, no input from the 'folk'. Then you could be as highhanded
as you are and nobody would be the wiser.--not impressed, mary lanser
