Matriarchies and patriarchies

how "patriarchies", "matriarches" etc. might be better considered (or not
considered). I would like to learn what other s have to say on this topic.
Ihave felt that rather than characteizing a whole society as
patriarchal, matriarchal or neither, we might more constructively look at
particular realms or spheres within the society and to see to what extent
they tend to be dominated (in ideology and/or practice) by one gender.
Even in society where one gender or group is oppressed or suppressed, there
might be arenas where the oppressed still exercise power directly or
indirectly and this would be interesting to explore.
