Good for you, John Cole. I had a med student whom I had never laid eyes
on before come into my hospital room last year and call me "Marie" - not
even "Mrs. Conrad." So I asked him what HIS first name was, and addressed
him that way for his entire visit. I figured that we were about the same
age, that I was being generous enough to offer him a learning opportunity
by letting him examine me post-op, and that I had been in grad school long
enough to get a little more respect than the average 8 year old.
Persnickety, maybe. But it made me feel a bit more in control in
an environment which is typically completely out of your control.
