Interesting! So does the British (and British derived) systems of ranks
like "Reader, Lecturer" and *then* Professor link up with the generally
more explicit acknowledgement of class differences in their society?
THen the American fuzziness of the "professor" category might say
something about our general reluctance to recognize class differences...
