NSF SUMMER INSTITUTE FOR RESEARCH METHODS
IN CULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGY

DESCRIPTION

A 3-week intensive workshop on state-of-the-art techniques
for collecting, constructing, and analyzing qualitative and
quantitative data. The format consists of classroom instruc-
tion each morning, and data collection and computer-based ana-
lysis in the afternoon. Topics include:

- Structured interviewing techniques, such as free listing,
pilesorts, triads, ratings and rankings

- Using ANTHROPAC software for questionnaire construction
and data analysis

- Text management and analysis: computer-aided coding and
retrieval techniques

- Direct observation data: coding behavior, time allocation

- Social network analysis: mapping relationships, detecting
cliques, measuring centrality, testing hypotheses

- Statistics appropriate for small non-random samples

- Detecting and visualizing relationships among variables:
measures of similarity and distance, multidimensional
scaling, cluster analysis, and correspondence analysis

LOCATION AND TIMING

The 1995 Institute will be hosted by the University of
California, Irvine from July 30th to August 18th, 1995.

COSTS

Tuition, room and board, instructional materials, and
software are provided by the Institute. Travel costs are
paid by the participant.

APPLICATION

All anthropologists with a Ph.D. degree are eligible to
apply. The Institute will select 14 participants from the
pool of applicants. Preference is given to candidates who
teach methods, are active researchers, or can otherwise be
expected to have a strong impact on the next generation of
anthropologists. There is no formal application form. To
apply, send a letter of interest and a current vita to the
address below. In your letter, please indicate how the
workshop will benefit your research and/or your teaching.
