James Carrier wrote extensively on the notion of "represent" which I
believe is not the issue. The only issue I think needing to be
addressed is, "let us have diversity". An individual in academe or in
the cabinet does not represent the ethnic group of which they may be a
part. Cogent and substantive experiences and perspectives of the most
diverse nature are needed to prepare the way for whatever contingency
the future may reveal.
While I thought well of the rationale used in Carrier's contribution, I
might suggest that we all look to where we might contribute to
diversity. If you are a white male, seek employment where there is a
paucity of same.
