help needed with an archaeological question

I noticed the archaeology listserv but trashed it thinking I would never
have need of it.
Now I would like to pose a question to the group which perhaps you can
place there (or resend the instructions to me).
Text follows:
***********
At several widely separated (Bronze age) archaeological localities,
ranging from Sardinia to French Polynesia, there is an odd and dsitinctive
stonework where immense blocks are assembled with an incredibly
perfect fit.
Despite a search of the literature I have failed to find an explanation of
the method (are the blocks rubbed together with an abrasive?) and why it
was practised in so many places (normal architectural progression or
exported technology?).
