jobs and the review process

John O'Brien suggests that one way to improve the job prospects for aspiring
anthropologists is to get the review time for journals down from 3-6 months to
a matter of weeks. My experience is that nothing I have submitted has been
reviewed in anything close to six months. American Antiquity took almost a
year just to do the initial review on a short response I wrote to an article
they had published. I definitely feel the excessive time taken to review
articles has made me less employable (or made it take a lot longer to become
employable). I would be happy to get the review time down to a consistent 3-6
months for the major journals.
