Read on Jobs

I'll second what Dwight Read has tosayabout academic jobs. The assumption
that demand will rise to meet supply is naive in
the extreme (especially
when so many of us now draw on Marx's ideas and should be aware that
the basic "crisis of capitalism" is caused by overproduction).

What I would like to suggest to our colleagues who have the academic jobs
is that it might be desirable to provide more support for colleagues who
work outside of academia: i.e., by providing access to libraries and other
resources. In the short term, this may seem counterproductive to people

guarding their positions. In the long run, it may help to build the non-
academic constituency the field needs to survive.
