Neither atheist nor evolutionists (in general, it's never good to
generalize) believe neither humans nor animals have souls, in a
non-metaphorical sense, something which exists independent of the body
and will remain after the body dies.

I think you are right in your last point, we have developed cognitively
enough to invent religion to explain the unknown (and other things).
