The "alt.XXX" and variations are so-called "newsgroups". They are
different from list-servers in that mailings are not sent direct to the
subscribers, but have to be periodically checked. Now-a-days, the easiest
way to check newsgroups is through a web-browser such as Netscape, but
various other forms of VAX (ezmail, ezinfo) programs allow access.
