Both the following may be useful:
Bohannon, Paul & Mark Glazer (eds.). 1973. High points in
anthropology. New York: Knopf (though more than 20 years old, this is
still in print. It consists of short, representatives reprintings of
chapters or articles from anthropological classics, eg. Spencer, Morgan,
Tyler, Boas, Kroeber, on down to E-P, Sahlins, and Levi-Strauss, as the
most recent.)
Service, Elman R. 1985. A century of controversy. Ethnological issues
from 1860 to 1960. Orlando, FL: Academic Press (Service deals with the
threads of development in critical topics, such as kinship, social
structure, government, etc., rather than dealing with personalities as is
the more common case in histories of anthropology. See in particular his
chapter on "Society and Culture.")
