**************** PLEASE CIRCULATE AS WIDELY AS POSSIBLE ******************

To our clients,

The Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies
Library will re-open on Wednesday 1 February 1995, except for the Pictorial
Collection which will re-open on Monday 6 February 1995. I would like to
thank all of our friends, depositors and clients for their understanding
during the period of the closure. Whilst we have by no means eliminated the
backlogs which have built up over the years in the cataloguing and
documentation of the collections, significant progress has been made. This
will help us to provide you with a better quality service and also assist
with ensuring the survival of our collections as a unique resource for
research and access.

In order to avoid recreating the serious backlogs which necessitated the
closure, it will be necessary to maintain the closure of the special
collections (Film Archive, Sound Archive and Pictorial Collection) each
Tuesday. It will, further, be necessary to extend this weekly closure to
the Print Library and its collections of manuscripts, books, journals and
pamphlets.

THUS THE AIATSIS LIBRARY WILL HENCEFORTH BE CLOSED TO PERSONAL ENQUIRIES,
GROUP VISITS, AND TELEPHONE ENQUIRIES ON EACH TUESDAY UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.

Library opening hours on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays will be
8:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. for the Print Library (except during winter hours when
the Library will close at 5 p.m. from a date to be advised) and 9 a.m. -
5:00 p.m. for the Special Collections. Appointments are required for all
visits to the Special Collections and for meetings with or research advice
from particular staff in the Print Library. However, the Reference Desk in
the Print Library is staffed at all times that the Library is open, and the
reference officer on duty will be happy to assist you with using the
Library. Should you have any general enquiries about the use of the
Library, contact the Library Director on (616) 246 1197 or via fax on 616
249 7310. My email address is gdm@aiatsis.gov.au, but, over the next few
weeks, because of impending staff changes, phone or fax contact will be more
reliable. Reference enquiries may be directed to 616 246 1182. Charges
apply for many services and details are available on request.

I would be grateful if you could circulate copies of this notice to other
relevant people, and thank you again for your forbearance during the closure.

Glenys McIver
Library Director
