Richard,

Well, the goats I slept next to for a time made lots of munching and other goat
noises (many farts among other things) in the night (until the owner decided
they were too much trouble and slaughtered them one by one--and we all had a
feast). They munching noises were especially loud when they were eating away
part of my thatched roof. With earplugs I could easily have lost a good
portion of the roof in a single night. Actually, the goats were no trouble at
all compared to the cow who came into my house in the dead of night and began
to eat the vinyl cover of my portable typewriter. The heavy breathing awoke
me. I wouldn't have heard it with ear plugs. It was pitch black and a fumbled
for my flashlight, shined it--unfortunately--into the cow's eyes. This
panicked her. The house was too small for her to turn around so she backed
out, missing the door by a couple of feet and taking out part of the wall. On
reflection, maybe I would have been better off with ear plugs and without the
vinyl typewriter cover. But then, there's no telling what whe might have tried
to eat next.

I'll let the person who asked me if I had ever slept next to a herd of goats
respond for him/herself.

Phil Young
