Invitation to participate in a session at the CASCA meetings to
be held in Vancouver B.C., May 5-8, 1994.

Gifts, Commodities, and the nature of Capitalism on the
Periphery:
We invite papers from any geographical area which focus on
the nature and import of processes of commoditzation (or their
lack) on "traditional" or gift economies. Participants are
invited to consider the social and economic processes operating
in any locality, within a framework which problematizes rather
than assumes the relationships between gifts and commodities, or
capitalist and non-capitalist economic systems. We suggest Chris
Gregory's Gift and Commodities as a common starting point for the
papers in this session, but encourage the use of any other like
work, either classical or contemporary, for framing the papers.
