I wasn't going to jump in the terminology-body modification discussion (which
I find interesting), but Hill says something that provides an interesting
insight. It seems that as long as we are talking about what other people do,
we use words such as mutilation/deformation. But Hill writes: "i don't
recall anyone anticipating the current rage for tattooing and body-jewelry".
I was struck by the term "body-jewelry", particularly since this refers not
merely to pierced ears, but piercing and inserting of rings, etc in other
parts of the body as well. What has been called mutilation, etc (a
somewhat derogatory term) becomes "body jewelry" (definitely a positive term)
when it refers to what has now become part of mainstream society.
