Mike, I find your message terrific perhaps because I'm a four-field
traditionalist. To take a tiny segment of it, you say: "Practically
nobody who got a Ph.D. after the start of the 70s
took any courses in linguistics per se." To illustrate, somebody on the
list who claims to be a four-fieldist subsumed linguistics into
social/cultural anthropology, thereby losing one field and becoming a
