One way to effectively deal with this sort of popular thinking--and her
books are now very much in vogue by students (especially the brighter
students, i.e., those who are in the honors programs)--is to have your
intro classes critique them as part of the final exam. The newspaper
article (which I copied from the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Jan 8, 92;
it was previously printed in the Los ANgeles times) was given to students
the last week of class or so; I then had them break into small groups in
order to discuss/critique it--which, as I told them, would be one question
on the final examination.
It was, as these things go, successful.
